Yesterdays' EastSide " Makers" Market was filled with chatter; music and juggling, as well as delicious coffee and warming food.

Yes ...the weather was cold and very wet outside but inside it was warm and welcoming with friendly and very talented "makers" happy to share their time and explain the processes involved in producing their handcrafted items.

We hope everyone enjoyed the day , we had alot of comments from visitors who were amazed at the quality and variety of art and crafts on "show".

Linda Brown from Xtras Direct at the Shoreline presented a gift voucher to Rowena of Rowena's Tasmanian Designs for her beautifully presented stall of handcrafted wool products.

The EastSide "Makers" Market committee would like to thank all the " Makers" and Linda Brown for her support. We would also like to acknowledge our "visitors" who braved the cold and rain to make the market a success despite the weather.

We look forward to the next "Makers" Market on a lovely sunny summer Sunday the 5 December .

Well the time is here again for the next Eastside Market. Even the weather is looking great for tomorrow with the showers clearing.

We have 28 "Makers" with a diverse range of handmade art and crafts. Including soy candles and beauty products; designer chairs and cushions using Austaliana teatowels by Sue Hall ( a must see), amazing one-off designed shoes by Nicole; clothing for children and "grown ups", artwork, cards; jewellery and accessories, magnificent flowers arrangements and gifts. Too much to mention.
You will need to come and see for yourself...
The venue is large, light and has great heating!!!There is also our barista Rust & Co for when you need to sit and enjoy a drink and snack in our comfy chairs in our coffee shop.

See you tomorrow Sunday 5 from 10am to 3pm. Bring Dad or give him breakfast in bed and come along with a friend.

There has been an amazing number of "Makers" interested in attending the next EastSide Market on Sunday 5 September. The quality and variety of applications has been of a very high standard. We have already chosen and notified 20 successful makers. Don't worry we still have spaces for 6 makers.
Applications close Monday 10 August so you need to hurry up and send it in ( don't forget photos) and it is quicker and easier to send an electronic version.

well, we're still very much on a learning curve, but I think yesterday was "a good one" ...cold, infact bone-chilling weather, but thank goodness our trusty patrons left the warmth of their homes to come and enjoy the day with us. There was much laughter, music and a great crowd supporting our makers (particularly the "foodies"), surprise, surprise...,,,thanks Martin, Jo & Co, Louise and Helen.

As you can see from the pics,(these are only a taster), there will be lovely makers there ready to tend to your every desire, and there's even a small "lounging" area for you to sit and enjoy some of the lovely food on offer and of course a cup of beautiful coffee.

Our resident Club Superintendent Constable Steve Fry will have a barbecue fired up outside to welcome and tempt you. We'll also have on show the work of some talented Rosny College students, there some great up and coming talented makers there too.

well, I think it really has come on just a tad early personally, but then this was the catalyst for our request of participants; apart from getting that feeling across to all of the lovely visitors. We've decided to offer a challenge to participants for our "winter" June 6 "makers" market i.e. creating their own signage: of course there's an incentive, and I know from speaking to one of our very savvy makers it is just that - a challenge - of course much easier if a trading name is short and sweet, but for those of us with longer titles, well the proof will be in the pudding, or should that be viewing!!!!!!!!

Well, it seems a long time since I've updated information; but rest assured we are on track and have lots of lovely makers ready and waiting to take part in our second market day on SUNDAY JUNE 6........We're notifying participants on a daily basis and will have the final notices out by the end of this week; plus more pics . But just want to give you some info on the committee just to keep you interested, so here goes:
Robyn Davies

Having been an art teacher in a past life Robyn has moved on somewhat.

She is to be found with her beautiful collection of re-styled clothing and jewellery and her label is “Revisited” – I think that says it all as her inherent style comes through in her works – She has an amazing “stash” of all things creative and is constantly seeing new ways of adapting clothing and items of fashion.
Lauren Carpenter
"EraZistable" is a very appropriate title for Lauren and her label. Her amazing knowledge of fashion history and her ability to visualize and set a scene to fit any scenario is amazing – having been an art teacher she knows just how to get a particular effect for whatever task is at hand. Being a collector she wants the responsibility of getting rid of her “collection” and getting it out there in another format. It’s double the fun – double the vision.

Judy Walker
“Just Jude” is a free spirit and fantastic basket maker and creator of wonderful clothing – she has an enviable collection of fabrics, beads and basket materials, just to name a few, to draw inspiration from. Her baskets are inspired from the environment around her and are created from a multitude of fibres.

Felicity Matthews
Felicity is a print-maker, stitcher and generally a very creative spirit – She is able to put pen to paper to capture ideas then transfer them to fabric with amazing results. Always aware of pattern and colour, she sees pattern and colour in the environment around her, whether it be leaf litter on the forest floor, seaweed on the beach or pattern on the leaves in her garden. She constantly stitching pieces of fabric, some for use in current projects, others just filed away for future use.

a few days breathing space and quite a lot of sleep seem to have made somewhat of a difference to my state of mind - this seemed to be the general consensus of opinion among we five committee members, but really we were so amazed at just how well it all came together on the day; in other words a VERY SUCCESSFUL day. An amazing amount of work and I really take my hat off to all the organisers of other markets.

We tried to step outside the square a little and invite makers who had not shown their "faces" too publicly to this point in time. The combination of ages, styles and produce was fantastic and we really thank all of the participants for their great feedback and patience and address those issues that were raised; we will finish EARLIER next time - Sunday JUNE 6.

We are now open to receiving expressions of interest from potential participants; and repeat offenders; we also received a lot of enquiries on the clipboard on Sunday and will address these as well. just a reminder: eastsidemarket@hotmail.com,

well after being without internet access for a day I need to get busy. All's well and everything is (or soon will be) in place for our big day tomorrow - This morning Robyn Davies spoke to Chris Wisby!!! on ABC Radio National spreading the word to listeners, and in Friday's Mercury "On" there was a more publicity for us.
Wow I seem to be having a block for words to flow, but here's a list of participants to whet your appetite. Hope the hall overflows with love and laughter.

SIGNAGE - well, it was there yesterday!!!!!

and so it was; but then there are those that roam the streets thinking it might be fun to create a little havoc. Today my hubby and I spent the day looking for signs that "had disappeared overnight" - hooray, there they were stashed in the bushes and tossed over the fence; ....two out of six aint bad......Robyn and Jacque placed one in front of our venue (PCYC) as it was a polling station for the State elections, and it caused a quite lot of interest. Hopefully they wil stay put and "draw the crowds". Hope everyone's geared up for what should be a great day.....Our "To Market To Market" article just down a little is a great article written by one of our own committee, Lauren Carpenter and really says it all. I think all of the market events are a credit to the organisers and that people are starting to put two and two together and get a lot more pleasure from the "shopping experience"

To Market To Market
"As we move further away from the craft laden days of the 50’s and 60’s, full of home sewing, knitting and crocheting, that simple phrase “wear that lovely something or other I made for you” has certainly lost its place and power over the last 40 years.
Are we now the poorer for the over supply of factory churned out fashion, accessories and giftware? We can’t answer the proffered question, but we do know there is a real and viable resurgence in home craft. Skills and craft activities that have survived the ruthless efficiency of the industrial revolution are back – products made by hand are being revisited.
In the adult playground of creative endeavour where ideas and outcomes are intensely personal, is it impossibly romantic to consider making by hand is not too innocent, too pastoral or even too slow to compete in this laptop and smart phone driven 21st century.
Could these hand/home made labels be a backlash against excess and sameness in modern consumerism? Why do people still make? Is it now that the rewards are as simple as a return to heart-work and love jobs as a reaction against big business and mass production?
These ideas are certainly up for discussion. However, if you want a different shopping experience, head out to one of Hobart’s burgeoning “makers markets” and simply choose – less over more, quality over quantity, individual over mass produced, but most importantly celebrate home-grown creative ideas and mix with women and men who are happy to make products just for you."

Wow, I have just been looking at a heap of blogs and am blown away with the talent out there - makes me feel very much like the novice with what I'm doing here, as this is really a VERY simple blog by the standards that are being set, but there's lots of great imagery for you to look at.

We have a full house on the 28th and are really excited with the new makers coming on board, think you'll find something to suit everyone....hope so anyway. We also have BaristaSista coming along and as usual Anja sets a very high standard. You'll spot flyers around in various venues - purple and green - very easy to spot them, and our signage goes up on Sunday arvo

Well here we are, the weekend of closure of applications.
There is breathing space, so don't stress if you're behind the eight ball, after all we are followers of the "slow art" movement and there's always room to move.
